Introducing Early Church Emphasis Month

In a recent, two-part essay, entitled To the Sources, I attempted to account for the resurgence of interest in early Christian thought and life that has transpired over the last 10-15 years. While interest in the early church has certainly been evident at other key moments throughout church history, the present engagement with the past can be instructive to those interested in a vibrant, robust doctrine of the church for the future.

To this end, during March 2015 Forum contributors are focusing on key figures, texts, and ideas from the period we generally think of as the early church or Patristic period. We’re especially pleased to welcome the contribution of first-time, guest contributor Dr. Kevin Hester. Hester is a specialist in late Patristic and early Medieval Christianity. We hope readers will take extra notice of his post later this month. Additionally, this month’s posts will include book reviews of two titles that are complementary to our overall emphasis month.

Contributions will move chronologically through history, starting with Athenagoras, followed by Athanasius (Part I and Part II), Gregory of Nanziansus, Augustine, and concluded by Dr. Hester’s contribution on Gregory the Great. We believe that readers will find each figure has something unique to offer for contemporary Christian faith and practice.
