Welch College’s 75th-year Anniversary

The month of September marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of Welch College. Since its founding in 1942, it has educated thousands upon thousands of students in its mission is to serve Christ, His Church, and His world through Biblical thought and life.

Welch College began as a two-year school but began offering four-year bachelor’s degrees by the early 1950s. In the late 1950s, it gained accreditation with AABC (now ABHE, The Association for Biblical Higher Education). During the 1960s, Welch added several new majors. In the 1970s and 80s, its student enrollment grew considerably to include nearly 700 students, having begun with just a handful of students in 1942. In the 1990s, Welch gained regional accreditation with SACSCOC, allowing students to transfer credits more freely to and from the college. Since the millennium, it has changed its name from Free Will Baptist Bible College to Welch College, and it has moved its campus from Nashville to Gallatin, Tennessee.

We would be remiss if we did not remember our history. In celebration of the college and of God’s work through it, the HSF is devoting the month of September to Welch College. Jesse Owens will begin the month with an essay on the legacy of J. P. Barrow. Jackson Watts will follow with an essay about that of Ralph and Margaret Hampton. Next, we will post an essay about the college’s transformational curriculum, written by Phillip Morgan. Finally, we’ll end the month with a post about the future of Welch College by Matthew Steven Bracey and Matthew McAffee.

We invite you to celebrate Welch College’s seventy-fifth anniversary with us.
